- Hong Kong is located on the south China coast near the Pearl River Delta, a region of China with a long history of foreign trade. Hong Kong was a British colony from 1842 until 1997 and is now a special administrative region (HKSAR) of the People's Republic of China (PRC) with an estimated 2007 population of 6.9 million people.
