- No other name but that of astronomer Edwin Hubble would have better fit the telescope that more than any other has deeply influenced our collective imagination over the last two decades. In 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) became the first optical telescope to be put into orbit, and it has revolutionized the way we look at the cosmos.
