- John Cook Wright was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Washington, DC, and Tucson, Arizona. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1950, received a bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1954, and after a 2-year stint in the army, earned his doctoral degree in psychology from Stanford University in 1960.
