- MARYLAND WAS SETTLED by Native Americans after 10,000 B.C.E., with the first Europeans arriving with John Cabot in 1498, and George Calvert, First Baron Baltimore, applying for a royal charter to settle the Maryland Colony in 1632. Its first settlers arrived in 1634, led by Leonard Calvert, George's son, who initially planned to run the colony as a feudal ruler.
