- The field of Native American studies was initially launched in order to bring a Native American viewpoint to issues of concern to Native Americans. This entry reviews the history and institutionalization of Native American studies, from its origins in the late 1960s to its evolution as a multi disciplinary field addressing such varied topics as social and economic issues, history, health, law and public policy, cultural studies and literature, and filmmaking.
