Definition
- On 7 September 1977, at a ceremony held at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D.C., United States President Jimmy Carter and Panama's military leader Omar Torrijos signed the Panama Canal Treaty. The agreement provided for the transfer of the waterway from U.S. to Panamanian jurisdiction over a twenty-year period, concluding on 31 December 1999.
