- Protagoras of Abdera was the first and greatest of the Greek Sophists. His credited innovations include professing the title “Sophist,” charging a fee, and teaching how to speak and win on either side of any question. [Source: Encyclopedia of Political Theory; Protagoras (c. 490–420 BCE)]
