  • Rosa Parks was an African American activist unanimously considered the mother of the Civil Rights Movement for her refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama, on December 1, 1955. Although her rebellious act was minimized for years, passed off as more the result of fatigue than of conscious militancy, Parks is now recognized as having provided the impetus for the Montgomery bus boycott and the ensuing Civil Rights Movement.Born Rosa Louise McCauley on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama, Parks was the first child of James and Leona Edwards McCauley, and grew up experiencing firsthand the system of rigid segregation between the races that characterized the American South in the first half of the 20th century.
