Definition
- African American slave whose relationship with U.S. founding father and President Thomas Jefferson has caused debate and controversy among their descendants, historians, and scholars for more than 200 years. Sally Hemings was born into slavery in Virginia in 1773 to a white father, John Wayles, and his mulatto slave, Elizabeth Hemings.
