- Standard Oil is synonymous with corporate greed and ruthless business practices. As a symbol of the great robber barons era of the late 1800s and early 1900s, Standard and other titans in the railroad, banking, coal, and sugar industries amassed wealth by engaging in unethical business practices, including monopolization, fraud, price fixing, and exploitation of labor.
