State of the Union Address
Definition
- The Constitution requires the president to report on the “state of the nation” every year, and since early in the twentieth century presidents have addressed a joint session of Congress to assess the nation's problems and achievements and to propose policies. George Washington began the practice of delivering the State of the Union address in person to Congress. [Source: The Presidency A to Z; State of the Union Address]
