- Stein Rokkan (1921–1979), professor of comparative politics at the University of Bergen, Norway, was one of the world's leading social scientists. His life work produced a gigantic “historical fresco” of political development in Europe universally acknowledged as being fundamental to the study of the formation of nation-states and the birth of democracy.
