UN-HABITAT

Definition

  • UN-HABITAT (Habitat), formerly known as the United Nations Center for Human Settlement, was created in 1978 and authorized by the General Assembly to work toward developing environmentally sustainable towns and cities and providing adequate shelter for all people. From its inception in 1978 through 1997, Habitat worked almost solitarily in its efforts to prevent and rectify problems that stemmed directly from urban growth.
