- In 2007, the National Science Foundation ranked the University of Colorado (CU) system first of 150 public universities in federally funded environmental science research. The university also obtains funds from the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Energy, and the Interior, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
