- THE UNIVERSITY OF Pittsburgh is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)–recognized Comprehensive Cancer Center in western Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) works to “advance the understanding of cancer; to develop innovative methods for cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment; and to provide state-of-the-art cancer care.” The UPCI was founded in 1984, earning Comprehensive Cancer Status by 1990.
