- With the publication of the book The Natural Approach in 1983, Stephen Krashen and Tracy Terrell introduced a five-hypothesis model, known as the monitor model, that describes their view of the second-language acquisition process. In addition, they proposed a curricular approach designed to ensure an environment that would provide optimal conditions for language learning, known as the natural approach.
