Definition
- High altitude is generally defined as an elevation above sea level greater than 6,500 feet (ft), or 2,000 meters (m). Above this elevation, unacclimatized athletes may develop altitude sickness, or acute mountain sickness (AMS), shortly after their ascent. [Source: Encyclopedia of Sports Medicine; Altitude Sickness]
