Preferred term

antiglobalization

Definition

  • Antiglobalization cannot be understood without first considering what is meant by “globalization.” While globalization is not a new phenomenon, the most recent incarnation of it does stand out from previous globalization “waves” that (while the exact timing is debated) date back to when explorers and traders began canvassing the world for new lands and resources in the 15th and 16th centuries. The most recent wave of globalization began circa 1980 and continues to the present. [Source: Green Issues and Debates: An A-to-Z Guide; Antiglobalization]
