- Chauvinism is extreme nationalism or excessive pride in an individual's group. The term originated with Nicolas Chauvin, a French soldier who exhibited a fanatical devotion to Napoleon Bonaparte and the French Empire. [Source: The Encyclopedia of Political Science; Chauvinism]
