community mental health centers
Definition
- Community mental health centers (CMHCs) are locally organized and locally funded organizations mandated through government regulation to provide a range of psychological and psychiatric services to residents of a designated geographic area (catchment area). CMHCs as described here are primarily a United States phenomenon, but similar centers exist in other countries, such as the United Kingdom, where they are known as community psychiatric services (CPS), and Italy, where they are called community mental health centers.
