Preferred term
consanguinity
Definition
- Literally meaning ‘of the same blood’, the term is used in anthropology and in many legal systems to refer to a blood kinship tie. It is contrasted with ‘affinal’, so that my bond with my son is consanguineous while my bond with my wife is affinal. [Source: The SAGE Dictionary of Sociology; Consanguinity]
