Definition
- The participation in medical decision making by the patient in the selection of treatment alternatives. In 1978 the World Health Organization (WHO) in their Alma-Ata Declaration set out a vision for primary healthcare that stated that ‘people have the right and duty to participate individually and collectively in the planning and implementation of their health care’. In 1986 the WHO developed the Ottawa Charter on Health Promotion in which consumer empowerment was identified as a central element in improved health and well being.
