Preferred term
core competence
Definition
- Prahalad and Hamel introduced the notion of core competence: “A capability or skill that provided the thread running through a firm's businesses, weaving them together into a coherent whole.”10 A core competence is an internal activity that a company performs better than do other competitors. A core competence is also something that a company does well relative to other internal activities: resources and capabilities that serve as a source of competitive advantage for a firm over its rivals.
