- A cross-sex friendship (also called opposite-sex friendship or cross-gender friendship) is a friendship between a genetic female and male in which both partners label the relationship as a friendship. Cross-sex friendships do not involve family members, are nonromantic, and are almost always devoid of sexual contact. [Source: Encyclopedia of Human Relationships; Friendships, Cross-Sex]
