Definition
- The term dangwai means “outside the party” and denotes the crop of illegal media that emerged in Taiwan to challenge the harsh one-party rule imposed in the late 1940s. After his defeat by the Communists, Chiang Kai-shek took his quasi-Leninist Nationalist regime (Kuomintang, or KMT) and fled to Taiwan in 1949.
