- DefinitionWhile there is no internationally agreed definition, the term ‘deaths in police custody’ tends to refer to those fatalities which occur at the point of arrest through to release from police detention. This definition includes cases where a person has been restrained by officers during an arrest, where someone dies on the way to a police station, and where a detained person is taken ill and subsequently dies in hospital.Distinctive FeaturesInformation on deaths in custody differs widely across countries and some of the best evidence can be found for England and Wales.
