- The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) is the entity responsible for the coordination and supervision of all agencies of government that function as part of the U.S. armed forces and national security apparatus. The department, also known as the Pentagon, is the largest employer in the world, consisting of 2.13 million active duty soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and civilian workers.
