Preferred term

dendrites

Definition

  • Branched extensions from the cell body of a neuron, or soma, that participate in the transmission of neural impulses by receiving incoming impulses. Dendrites (derived from the Greek word dendron, “tree”) receive and process most of the excitatory electrical stimulation from sensory organs or other neurons and conduct the electrical impulses to the cell body.
