Definition
- Desertion, commonly defined as a member of the armed forces being absent without permission from his or her unit for a period of at least 30 days, has been a constant problem in every military force in history. In the U.S. Army, desertion has typically been a particular issue during peacetime, especially when conditions of military service have been difficult or isolated.
