Preferred term
disability rights
Definition
- Congress in 1990 passed landmark legislation, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), prohibiting discrimination in employment, public services, or public accommodations against individuals with physical or mental disabilities. The act was approved with strong bipartisan support, but drew criticism after its passage as businesses and state and local governments had to make sometimes expensive changes to accommodate people with disabilities.
