- Doping is a reality of sport, and has been throughout recorded history. In the conjoined histories of sport and performance enhancement, the goal of victory and the social or economic capital that victory brings to the athlete have provided the motivation for athletes to intentionally alter their physiological functioning for a level of functioning that will promote winning.
