Concept information
Preferred term
drug use and abuse
Definition
- The use of psychoactive substances is a common feature of all human societies, and these drugs have been used throughout human history for medicinal purposes, pain control, religious rituals, and personal pleasure. Notwithstanding the “war on drugs” metaphor of recent decades, drug use and abuse are not problems of late modernity but rather problems from antiquity.
