- Fainting (medically known as syncope) is a sudden brief loss of consciousness and postural tone. The most common presentation of fainting is a person who was standing or sitting upright and then suddenly began to feel uneasy and uncomfortable. [Source: Encyclopedia of Global Health; Fainting]
