  • A fine is a monetary sum ordered by the court to be paid to the state by a convicted offender for the purpose of retribution and deterrence. While the use of fines is a common form of criminal sanction in both the United States and many European countries, the use of fines and their relative successes varies greatly by jurisdiction.
