Definition
- Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). Although most individuals are asymptomatic, following a two-week incubation period, patients will present with painful blisters surrounding the genitals and rectum.
