Concept information
Preferred term
heroin abuse
Definition
- The illicit use of heroin is an important international health concern, especially in light of evidence showing that unsafe drug injection practices lead to transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus causing the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), as well as other deadly diseases. Heroin is a semisynthesized drug that is processed from morphine, a natural derivative of the poppy seed plant, and is readily produced and distributed in multiple countries worldwide.
