- Hobbies are activities such as crafting, sporting, or gardening that are carried on not as a regular occupation but primarily for pleasure or as a pastime. The word hobby was derived from the 17th-century phrase hobbyhorse, and denotes having a hobbyhorse (a comfortable pastime, or a vocation) that one rides for hours and hours.
