illegitimacy
Definition
- Illegitimacy arises when a child is born to unmarried parents or when the marriage during which the child was born is annulled and therefore considered null and void from the beginning. An illegitimate child has also been variously called a bastard, an out-of-wedlock child, or a nonmarital child. [Source: Encyclopedia of Sexual Behavior and the Law; Illegitimacy]
