- Kindergarten (from the German: kinder, children; garten, garden) refers to an educational experience that takes place the year prior to first grade. Designed to ease the transition between the home and more formal schooling, kindergarten was originally developed as a play-based program that supported social, emotional, language, cognitive, and physical development.
