kleptomania

Definition

  • Kleptomania is characterized by the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) as a recurrent failure to resist impulses to steal objects that are not needed for personal use or for their monetary value. Many of those diagnosed with this disorder carelessly throw away or abandon the stolen objects, while other individuals may hoard them compulsively into piles in their homes.
