- The liver is a vital organ in the body that plays a central role in human health including detoxification of ingested substances, lipid metabolism, and synthesis of blood clotting factors and important body proteins. The cells of the liver, hepatocytes, house thousands of chemical reactions every second in order to perform myriad functions that contribute to human health.
