Definition
- Researchers generally agree that loneliness involves an awareness that one's social and personal relationships are deficient and that this awareness is accompanied by emotions of sadness, emptiness, or longing. In the 1980s, researchers became interested in studying children's cognitive representations of their peer relations and their emotional reactions to relationship difficulties.
