- Mental illness is a broad term typically used to refer to one or more of a series of disorders that are defined and described in the International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition, and in the United States are published in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR). The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has conducted research indicating that, in any given year, about one-fourth of the population of the United States has a diagnosable mental disorder.
