miami riot of 1980
Definition
- The Miami, Florida, riot of 1980 was a culmination of a sequence of events that were seen by many of the city's Black residents as clear evidence of a pattern of racial bias and outright racism directed against African Americans. Although Miami, like many other American cities, had experienced racial tensions in the past, the series of incidents that began in 1979 would lead to an eruption of violence that crippled Miami for days, leaving 18 people dead and close to 1,000 wounded.
