Definition
- Oaths—promises that are made binding by the swearing of the maker on something that that person holds to be sacred—were a central feature of the political tradition of ancient Greece and Rome, and they played an important part in the Jewish and early Christian traditions of the ancient world. In Greece, the oath was the way in which religion contributed to social harmony and political stability. [Source: Encyclopedia of Political Theory; Oaths]
