Definition
- Obstetrics and gynecology is a medical and surgical specialty based on the female reproductive system and the management of pregnancy and childbirth. A medical practitioner in the field of obstetrics and gynecology is usually referred to as an OB/GYN. The social and cultural history of obstetrics and gynecology is just as important as its development as a medical specialty. [Source: Encyclopedia of Motherhood; Obstetrics and Gynecology]
