Preferred term
pastoral societies
Definition
- As a way of life, pastoralism depends on keeping livestock rather than farming on settled, arable land. In the northern lands of Lapland and Siberia, people herd partially domesticated reindeer; people in inner Asia (Mongolia, Tibet, and western China) keep horses, camels, and yaks.
