Definition
- The term penumbra means shadow. It became a notable part of the discourse of constitutional law with the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Griswold v. Connecticut (1965), which outlawed Connecticut's laws restricting birth control on the basis that the laws violated “zones of privacy” created and protected by the U.S. Constitution.
