Concept information
Preferred term
politicians and divorce
Definition
- The personal lives of politicians have long been subject to scrutiny, in part because of the assumption—emphasized by many politicians themselves—that an individual's character and conduct in life is a predictor of their conduct in statesmanship. Though divorce is no longer stigmatized per se, the circumstances surrounding a divorce often open a politician up to criticism.
