- The term “polycystic kidney disease” is usually used to refer to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease. In these disorders, genetic mutations result the formation of multiple cysts, which are fluid-filled spaces lined with a layer of cells.
